William Barnes Society Fund-Raising Event to celebrate the life of William Barnes the Dorset dialect poet.
Saturday 24th February 2018
From Tuesday 27th March 2018 19:30 until Tuesday 27th March 2018 21:30
Dorford Centre, Dorchester Bapist Church, 2 Bridport Rd, Dorchester DT1 1RR
For the many years of the dominance of Received Pronunciation (RP) it was easy to see William Barnes as an irrelevant eccentric. With more recent developments in linguistics, and a growing interest in national and regional diversity, it may be time for Barnes to reclaim his place as a significant figure in the world!! Dr Richard Bradbury will also discuss his more socially engaged prose works.
Speaker, Dr Richard Bradbury worked in Higher Education since 1982, teaching at four universities in three countries and currently working for the Open University. Also worked in mental health services and currently the joint chair of the Mental Health Act panel for Devon. Chaired Disability Arts South West. Edited "The collected prose works of William Barnes" and has written academic material on a wide range of subjects. Also, the author of one novel and five plays, with more of both on the way!
